Carros de Foc is the full nine-refuge mountain circuit. The shorter option has its own approach, two-refuge sequence and direct return to Espot.
THREE-DAY TRAIL SECTION · ESPOT BASE
Three days via Colomina & Josep Maria Blanc.
Colomina refuge beside its mountain lake.HutHikes photos
Leave your larger bag in Espot by arrangement, take a prebooked road transfer to Sallente, and spend two nights beside the high lakes. Walk up through Estany Gento or use the seasonal cable car, cross Collada de Saburó, then descend the Peguera valley back to Espot.
This is a southern section, not completion of the nine-refuge circuit. Shorter distances still mean demanding mountain walking, rough granite, steep rock steps and a long descent.
The walking sequence and the two refuge map links are listed below.
Day 1 · to Colomina
Day 2 · to Josep Maria Blanc
Day 3 · to Espot
Optional dam start · replaces station approach
Cable car · operation unconfirmed
The interactive map can show sourced route segments and the two refuges. Any gaps remain unjoined; the Espot–Sallente road transfer is not plotted. This is an overview, not a navigation track. Obtain a current topographic map and offline route, and check each stage with the wardens.

02 / BOOK IT YOURSELF
Two hut reservations and a few practical arrangements.
RESERVE YOUR HUT BEDS
Colomina first, Josep Maria Blanc next.
Check that both huts have space on consecutive nights, choose your meals and wait for both reservations to be confirmed. If either hut is full, adjust your dates before committing to the rest of the trip.
Book any hotel nights you want before or after the walk, and agree bag storage across the two hut nights. Ask Taxis Espot for a quote and pickup time for Sallente. If you choose the cable-car approach, check that it will be running on your date before buying a ticket. The hotel, luggage and transport details are below.
4 nights / 5 trip days: two refuge nights, plus only the Espot nights selected above.
About 19–21 km / 11.8–13.0 mi of walking from Sallente.
The date is your Espot arrival day; walking starts the following morning.
Optional Espot arrival night at your chosen base
Mountain night 1: Refugi Colomina
Mountain night 2: Refugi Josep Maria Blanc
Optional Espot finish night at the same chosen base
Distances are rounded estimates from the daily route descriptions, not measurements of a complete GPS route. Road travel and the cable car are excluded. Allow separately for extra travel nights and rest days.
Start with the prebooked road taxi from Espot. Confirm the exact Sallente drop-off for your chosen approach.
About 6–7 km / 3.7–4.3 mi Approx. 650–750 m ascent · 2.5–3.5 hours
Walk from the dam via Canal de Pigolo to Estany Gento, then continue to Colomina: roughly 6 km from the dam, with a longer reservoir-side approach from the lower cable-car station. Confirm the exact taxi drop-off; the map shows the dam-start spur as an alternative. Expect a steep climb, the old railway route and tunnels. Walking up is a normal starting choice, including when the lift is not operating.
About 2.5–3 km / 1.6–1.9 mi on foot Approx. 250–300 m ascent · 1–1.5 hours
Take an upward one-way cable car to Estany Gento only when operation is confirmed, then follow the mountain path to Colomina. The owner’s published Gento approach time is 45 minutes; this plan allows longer for a relaxed pace and route-finding. The cable-car ride and road journey are additional.
About 6–7 km / 3.7–4.3 mi Approx. 300–400 m ascent / 400–500 m descent · 3–4 hours
Pass Estany de Colomina and Estany de Mar, climb the Pas de l’Ós rock staircase and cross Collada de Saburó, about 2,670 m. Descend past the Cap de Port and Llastra lake basin to the refuge.
Expect steep steps, loose material and uneven granite. Coll de Monestero is a different continuation toward Mallafré and Sant Maurici; it is not part of this direct three-day return.
The hut publishes 6.1 km / four hours for the reverse direction. The uphill and downhill figures are estimates, not measurements from a GPS route.
About 7 km / 4.3 mi Approx. 1,000 m descent · 2.5–3.5 hours
Follow a mix of wider tracks and narrower footpaths down the Peguera valley on the GR 11-20, past the Lladres area and through the forest into Espot. Collect your stored bags when you reach town, allowing time before onward travel.
The slope varies, with some steeper stretches and about 1,000 m of descent overall. Take your time on uneven or wet ground. If you would prefer a vehicle exit, ask the authorised Espot 4×4 operator about access and pickup in advance.
The hut gives 7 km and 1,000 m for the uphill village approach. Allow roughly 2½–3½ hours for the descent, plus longer stops; this is an estimate.
These photographs show conditions on one trip. Check current snow, weather and route conditions before setting out.

04 / THE PLACES ALONG THE WAY
Two mountain nights. Choose your Espot nights.
Book the two refuge nights consecutively. The arrival and finish nights in Espot are optional. If staying on both sides, we recommend returning to the same chosen hotel so bag collection is simpler. Confirm both huts are staffed and have beds available on your dates.
One Espot base for the nights you choose.
Hotel Saurat is our practical starting recommendation. Choose either suggestion below or use your own stay. If booking both village nights, return to the same property. No hotel is selected or booked automatically.
Our practical starting recommendation: a central Espot base with a dedicated trek-luggage room. For extra comfort at the same hotel, compare the Superior Double with Terrace. Ask the hotel to agree storage for the whole walking interval, collection hours and any fee.
A comfortable small-hotel upgrade with a garden and fireplace lounge. Consider a suite with an adjoining sitting room for more space after the huts. The hotel says reservations include a buffet breakfast; its services page also lists a sauna and gym. Check access and opening before relying on them.
Ask directly whether it can store your larger bag across both refuge nights, with collection hours and any fee agreed in advance.
Choose the hotel that suits your trip, then contact it to book. Confirm both dates with the same property if returning after the walk. Storage requires the provider’s agreement, especially if you are not staying there.
A historic lakeside refuge, enlarged in 2017. Tourism information lists meals, mattresses, duvets, hot showers and toilets; ask about service conditions for your dates.
Shared refuge accommodation among the Peguera lakes. Reserve meals and discuss dietary requirements ahead. Carry cash: the hut says card payments cannot be guaranteed.
Map links locate the property, not the walking path. Confirm availability, room or bunk type, board, sleeping liner, payment, deposits and cancellation terms directly. Plan to carry your overnight kit between the huts.
MEALS, SNACKS & DRINKING WATER
Carry lunch. Reserve the refuge meals.
DAY 1 · ESPOT TO COLOMINA
Buy before the transfer.
Breakfast: eat in Espot before pickup. Lunch and snacks: carry them from town, whichever approach you choose.
Dinner: reserve at Colomina. Water: leave Espot with enough for the approach; ask the warden about potable water on arrival.
DAY 2 · COLOMINA TO BLANC
Leave the hut fully supplied.
Breakfast: reserve at Colomina. Lunch: order a picnic the previous evening. Carry snacks and extra food for delays.
Dinner: reserve at Josep Maria Blanc. Water: confirm a potable refill before departure; do not drink untreated lake water or rely on finding a refill along the way.
DAY 3 · BLANC TO ESPOT
Fuel the long descent.
Breakfast: reserve at Josep Maria Blanc. Lunch: pre-order a picnic and keep snacks for a slower descent.
Dinner: plan Espot dining around your finish or onward journey. Water: ask the hut about a potable refill before leaving.
Discuss dietary needs and meal times with both refuges. Do not assume lake water is safe to drink. Carry extra food and water for delays.
LUGGAGE
Leave the larger bag in Espot.
If you book village nights, returning to the same hotel makes collection simpler. Agree storage with that hotel or another confirmed provider for the entire walking interval, including collection hours and any fee. If leaving a car at the hotel, obtain permission for the whole stay; check other overnight-parking rules locally.
Carry a compact hut-to-hut pack with water, snacks, a change of clothes, rain gear, warm layers, navigation, a headtorch, personal essentials and a sleeping-bag liner if the huts require it. You carry this pack between huts.
Stop by the taxi stand near the centre of Espot, opposite Hotel Els Encantats, or contact Taxis Espot before your trip. Ask about availability and the price for a ride to Sallente on your chosen date, then agree the departure time, journey time and exact drop-off. You can meet at the stand or ask whether pickup from your lodging is possible. Arrange this ahead of your first walking day rather than counting on an immediate ride. This cross-valley transfer needs its own quote; standard park-excursion fares do not cover it.
The Vall Fosca cable car normally runs July–September. Operation varies by year, weather and maintenance; the 2026 opening was delayed until 17 July. October or future-season operation is not assumed. Book an upward one-way journey and reconfirm before fixing the taxi time.
Your selected walk-up approach does not require a cable-car ticket. Mountain conditions still need checking.
Your selected approach depends on confirmed lift operation. If it is unavailable, reassess daylight and fitness before switching to the longer walk-up.
Finish on foot in Espot, retrieve your stored bags and protect the onward-travel buffer. If returning by vehicle becomes necessary, arrange authorised access and a pickup in advance.
BEFORE THE BOOKINGS
Check the mountains as well as the beds.
Confirm staffed dates, current snow, weather and passage conditions with both wardens. The Colomina owner page carries an undated maintenance notice; it is not confirmation of opening or closure for your trip. This plan requires sure-footedness, three consecutive mountain days and a roughly 1,000 m descent with a pack.
Avoid the Saburó crossing in thunderstorms, poor visibility or snow beyond your experience. Snow can turn the route into a mountaineering undertaking. Postpone or use a qualified guide when conditions exceed your abilities.
Information checked 4 October 2026. Distances, climbs, descents and walking times are estimates. Obtain a current map and offline route; this guide does not provide a GPS file for navigation.
Loading the map. Places along the route are listed below.
Location overview: numbered pins mark approximate places. Dotted connections show their order, not the walking path. Use the linked route maps for navigation.
OFFICIAL MAP + FORFAIT
Start with the Carros de Foc pack.
The official forfait includes an Editorial Alpina 1:50,000 map. Reserve first; Espot-area starters collect the pack in Espot at the designated shop.
Use the official reservation map to choose huts, dates and board. A deposit confirms the booking; the remaining refuge bill is normally paid at each hut.
The authorised Espot service offers tiered drop-offs at Sant Maurici, Ratera Lake and, when operating conditions allow, Refugi d'Amitges itself. Choose the drop-off to match the first walking day.
This is unmarked high-mountain terrain, not a waymarked hotel walk. Carry the paper map, an offline route and the skills to navigate granite blocks, scree and poor visibility. Check refuge status, weather and park notices immediately before departure.

Seven-day circuit from Espot
A balanced outline using six refuge nights. It passes all nine official refuge areas, with Saboredo, Restanca and Mallafré normally treated as daytime checkpoints rather than overnights. The approximately 65 km figure describes the mountain circuit; village approaches and exits are additional. Daily distances in this outline are not confirmed. Check your chosen paths and overnight stops on the official map before booking.
Walking-day ranges are planning estimates, not a booked daily itinerary. Choose actual overnight stops and check stage distances before reserving. Rest days add time; they do not shorten walking stages.
Espot is the practical village base; the circuit itself uses staffed mountain refuges with shared sleeping. The recommended seven-day rhythm below combines all nine official refuges by passing some during the walking day. Reserve every overnight and meal before leaving the valley.
Know exactly which refuge bed you are reserving
On the official circuit identifies a staffed mountain refuge reached on foot. Village and base-town hotels are labelled separately; they are not substitutes for a booked mountain stage unless the access note explains the transfer.
Use both maps. "View stay on route map" shows the property with the route sequence. Google Maps is useful for roads, transfers and nearby services, but it is not the navigation source for a high-mountain circuit.

First-stage choice: walk the full approach, or reserve the authorised 4×4 from Espot to Sant Maurici, Ratera Lake or Amitges. Confirm the exact drop-off, operating conditions and departure time before shortening the walking stage.

In central Espot near the 4×4 taxi departure area. The hotel specifically offers a luggage room for guests heading into the refuges; confirm how long it will hold your bag and your post-trek collection time.
A staffed refuge on the official circuit and a flexible first-night destination from Espot. If continuing beyond Amitges on arrival day, confirm timing, weather and the next refuge reservation before setting out.
The seven-day plan reaches Colomèrs from Amitges after passing the Saboredo refuge area. Treat the stage as alpine travel and confirm the selected line with the refuge team.
The planned section crosses from Colomèrs toward Ventosa via the Restanca side of the circuit. Confirm the full route, pass conditions and whether Restanca is only a daytime stop or an additional overnight.
The Ventosa–Estany Llong crossing includes the high, demanding Contraix sector. Confirm snow, weather and timing with both refuges; this is not a casual valley walk.
The final refuge night sits above Espot in the Peguera valley. The next day can return to Espot directly or continue through the Mallafré/Sant Maurici side to complete the circuit; confirm the chosen line and timing.
These are lodging starting points, not reserved rooms. Access notes and any quoted distances come from the linked sources. Confirm your dates, room type, actual walking route and luggage collection with each property before booking.

Opening days and meal arrangements change. Reserve meals at remote overnight stops, request packed lunches in advance and fill or buy water before each walking section. Official top-up taps are useful planning anchors, but always check current availability.
This is a planning guide, not a promise that a café, shop, meal service or tap will be open. Confirm dietary needs, packed lunches, dinner reservations and water access directly before walking.
LUGGAGE & BASE STORAGE
Carry the mountain kit; store the rest.
A different luggage plan for a roadless refuge circuit.
This is a carry-your-own hut circuit. The practical lighter-travel strategy is to leave city clothing and a larger suitcase with a confirmed Espot hotel, then carry a compact refuge pack through the mountains.
LEAVE THE SUITCASE
Store non-trekking luggage in Espot.
Use the same staffed base before and after the circuit and obtain written confirmation that it will hold the bag for the full interval.
CARRY EVERY STAGE
Take a compact refuge pack.
Carry weather protection, navigation, required sleeping liner, personal items, water and emergency food between huts.
OPERATOR SUPPORT
Verify any unusual transfer claim.
Some packages may include selected vehicle connections at park gateways, but that is not the same as nightly hut-to-hut luggage delivery.
BASE-TOWN STORAGE
Hotel Saurat luggage room
The hotel explicitly invites refuge trekkers to leave luggage there. Book a pre- or post-trek stay and confirm dates, liability and collection hours directly.
The huts are reached on foot in roadless high mountains. Plan to carry all overnight essentials; never promise hut-to-hut baggage delivery unless a specific operator confirms every stage.
Confirm current prices, operating dates, collection times, excluded properties, bag limits, liability and any finish storage directly. An arranged holiday may already include daily transfers.
Booking an arranged hut trip?
Compare the operator's exact refuges, board plan, packed lunches, transfers and route direction with the independent route plan shown here.
Do not assume the package moves luggage between huts; confirm what you must carry and whether it includes base-town storage.
Use Espot as the principal base. Reach the village by road or regional bus, stay overnight, then use the local 4×4 shuttle toward Sant Maurici or begin the approach on foot.
Open the practical transport guide
Reaching Espot
Espot is in the Pallars Sobirà area of the Catalan Pyrenees. Public transport usually requires a regional connection and may be sparse; compare current bus options with a rental car or pre-booked transfer from Barcelona or Lleida.
Entering the national park
Private vehicle access inside the park is restricted. The authorised Espot 4×4 service offers Sant Maurici, Ratera Lake and Amitges-refuge drop-offs when conditions permit. Check the dated timetable, whether advance booking is required and the precise departure point in Espot.
Starting the circuit
Choose among three practical drop-offs: Sant Maurici for a longer scenic approach, Ratera Lake for a shorter approach, or Amitges refuge for a taxi-assisted first stage onward toward Saboredo or Colomèrs. Reserve the first refuge accordingly and collect the official forfait in Espot before departure.
Returning and leaving
Descend to Espot, collect stored luggage and keep a recovery night before onward travel. Do not plan a tight same-day flight connection after a weather-dependent mountain finish.
Mountain access and bus times change seasonally. Confirm the exact date, last 4×4 return, road conditions, bus connections and hotel arrival time.
05 / TRIPS OFFERED ON THIS TRAIL
Compare trips from walking-holiday providers.
These are bookable trips offered by independent providers along all or part of this trail. Walking trips are the core comparison; when a genuinely relevant horseback, cycling or running version exists, we label it clearly as a different way to experience the same route landscape.
