Walk from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay, choosing the complete crossing or a shorter western or central section. Distances vary with the route variant.

Route information & maps (new tab)

Loading the map. Places along the route are listed below.

Location overview: numbered pins mark the planned overnight sequence. The orange line is loaded from the mapped OpenStreetMap trail relation, so it follows the walking route much more closely than a town-to-town connector. Check the official route information for current diversions and closures.

OFFICIAL ROUTE

Check the current National Trail.

Use the official overview and linked map to check route choices and diversions, including the A19 bridge route near Ingleby Arncliffe.

SECTION DISTANCES

Match the figures to your route.

The table retains the 16-section distance reference below. Treat the figures as approximate: route variants, newer diversions and hotel access can change your actual day.

Independent 16-section reference ↗ (new tab)

Section notes checked 27 September 2026. Use current official mapping for navigation. HutHikes is an information planner; choosing stays here does not reserve rooms or transfers.

02 / CHOOSE YOUR SUPPORT

Your walk. Your way of travelling.

You can change this as you plan.

03 / MAKE ROOM FOR THE WALK

The whole trail, or your part of it.

Start with the route length. Then allow time to enjoy it.

Walk the whole trail

Choose your pace, then check daily stages and overnight availability.

Walking-day ranges are planning estimates, not a booked daily itinerary. Choose actual overnight stops and check stage distances before reserving. Rest days add time; they do not shorten walking stages.

04 / THE PLACES ALONG THE WAY

Shape the days around the stays.

Each row pairs a stay in the named place with the walk onward to the next stop. Use the property link, booking option and both maps to plan your night. Distances describe the listed route sections, not measured door-to-door walks; alternative paths and lodging approaches can change them. A stage-stop label does not mean the trail passes the hotel door.

Know how close the bed is before you book

On the trail means the property or official route source places the stay directly on the Way—no separate off-route transfer is normally planned. Near / stage stop means the stay is at a named stage stop, start or finish; the access note gives the most specific credible distance or relationship we found.

Use the named stay as your map anchor. "View hotel on route map" pins the property alongside approximate stage places. The mapped trail line and property pins help with orientation; they do not measure the walking connection to your room. "Open in Google Maps" helps inspect paths and directions; check the official route map for the marked trail. Any access distance or time below comes from its linked source and is labelled when property-reported.

1 St Bees17.1 mi / 27.5 km to Ennerdale Bridge

Check Cumberland Council's St Bees cliff-path closure plan and local diversions before the opening coastal section toward Fleswick Bay (checked 28 September 2026). Coastal cliffs give way to inland fields and villages. Allow for any diversion and the approach from your accommodation to the beach start; the reference distance is not a verified diverted mileage.

Official route overview ↗ (new tab)
2 Ennerdale Bridge13.2 mi / 21.3 km to Rosthwaite

Follow Ennerdale Water into a remote valley before the mountain crossing into Borrowdale. Carry your day's provisions; lake-shore and high-level alternatives change the distance and effort.

Official route overview ↗ (new tab)
3 Rosthwaite6.7 mi / 10.8 km to Grasmere

Climb through Greenup Gill and over Greenup Edge, then descend through Far Easedale. The shorter mileage hides rough, sometimes boggy mountain ground; the Helm Crag ridge is a separate, more exposed alternative.

Detailed section guide ↗ (new tab)
4 Grasmere7.2 mi / 11.6 km to Patterdale

A sustained climb leads to Grisedale Tarn, followed by the valley descent to Patterdale. Helvellyn and St Sunday Crag are optional high routes with extra climbing and exposure, not included in this section distance.

Detailed section guide ↗ (new tab)
5 Patterdale15.3 mi / 24.6 km to Shap

A demanding crossing via Angle Tarn and Kidsty Pike, followed by the descent to Haweswater. Plan an early start and carry food and water for a long mountain day.

Official route overview ↗ (new tab)
6 Shap5.4 mi / 8.7 km to Orton

Cross the M6 on the footbridge and enter open limestone country toward Orton. An easier recovery section after the Lakes, but the exposed plateau still calls for food, water and weather protection.

Detailed section guide ↗ (new tab)
7 Orton14.0 mi / 22.6 km to Kirkby Stephen

Open moorland and pasture replace the steep Lakeland fells. The gentler gradients still add up to a full walking day before Kirkby Stephen; stock up here before the Pennine crossing.

Terrain and stage reference ↗ (new tab)
8 Kirkby Stephen10.9 mi / 17.5 km to Keld

Climb to Nine Standards Rigg and cross wet Pennine moorland into upper Swaledale. Follow the signed seasonal route to protect the peat; mist and boggy ground can slow progress substantially.

Detailed section guide ↗ (new tab)
9 Keld11.2 mi / 18.1 km to Reeth

Choose the higher mining-country route or the gentler Swaledale riverside alternative. They have different distances and climbing; select your line before using the mileage as a daily target.

Official route overview ↗ (new tab)
10 Reeth10.3 mi / 16.6 km to Richmond

A gentler day through woodland, fields and villages toward Richmond. This is a useful place to allow extra time for the town and to organise the next accommodation and resupply.

Terrain and stage reference ↗ (new tab)
11 Richmond15.5 mi / 24.9 km to Danby Wiske

A long, lower-level crossing with farmland and stretches of quiet lane. Lower ascent does not make this a short day; carry lunch and confirm your Danby Wiske dinner arrangements ahead.

Terrain and stage reference ↗ (new tab)
12 Danby Wiske14.0 mi / 22.5 km to Osmotherley

Continue across the Vale of Mowbray toward the Cleveland Hills. Use the official A19 bridge diversion via East Rounton, then continue toward Osmotherley; check current mapping because this changes older itineraries.

13 Osmotherley10.9 mi / 17.5 km to Clay Bank Top

Expect repeated climbs and descents on the Cleveland Hills rather than a level ridge stroll. Confirm the Clay Bank pickup point and arrival window before setting off if staying down in Great Broughton.

14 Clay Bank Top10.1 mi / 16.3 km to Blakey Ridge

Climb Carr Ridge onto Urra Moor, then follow the old railway track from Bloworth Crossing toward the Lion Inn. Gradients ease after the initial climb, but the moorland remains exposed with few facilities.

15 Blakey Ridge10.1 mi / 16.2 km to Grosmont

Leave the open moors for Glaisdale and the wooded Esk Valley, continuing via Egton Bridge to Grosmont. This is a changing mix of moorland, lanes and valley paths; allow time beyond the downhill sections.

Detailed section guide ↗ (new tab)
16 Grosmont15.0 mi / 24.1 km to Robin Hood’s Bay

The final day still has a steep climb out of Grosmont, moorland and Little Beck woodland before the coastal approach. Finish down in the old village at Robin Hood's Bay; an upper-village bed means climbing back afterward.

Detailed section guide ↗ (new tab)
17 Robin Hood’s BayFinishing area

Trail finish. Allow time for the old village and seafront, then the uphill return to accommodation on Station Road. A finish-night stay is separate from onward transport.

These are lodging starting points, not reserved rooms. Access notes and any quoted distances come from the linked sources. Confirm your dates, room type, actual walking route and luggage collection with each property before booking.

LUGGAGE TRANSFERS

Walk with a daypack; move the main bag.

Book the overnight sequence first, then confirm every exact property with the courier.

The Coast to Coast is well set up for daily baggage moves, but scarce-bed and transfer-only nights still need checking. Pay special attention to Keld, Clay Bank Top and Blakey Ridge, and confirm the final Robin Hood's Bay handoff.

DAYPACK WALKING

Move the main bag every day.

Use a Coast to Coast luggage service between your booked stays and carry only the day's walking kit.

CAR LOGISTICS

Avoid leaving a car at one endpoint.

Consider secure parking around Kirkby Stephen with passenger transfers to St Bees and back from Robin Hood's Bay.

DEDICATED COAST TO COAST SERVICE

Coast to Coast Packhorse

Runs west-to-east luggage transfers, passenger transfers and Kirkby Stephen parking. Confirm each accommodation and any finish-day bag handoff.

Get there—and get back—simply

Arrive in St Bees by rail and leave Robin Hood's Bay by bus to a rail gateway. Public transport or an end-to-end transfer is usually simpler than leaving a car at one endpoint for the full walk.

Open the practical transport guide

Getting to St Bees

St Bees has its own railway station on the Cumbrian Coast line. Carlisle or Lancaster are useful wider rail gateways depending on your journey. Arrive the day before and walk to the beach trailhead the next morning.

Leaving Robin Hood's Bay

Robin Hood's Bay has no railway station. Use the X93/X94 bus corridor toward Whitby or Scarborough, then continue by rail or bus. Check the dated timetable, especially evenings and Sundays.

Driving the route

If you are driving, consider secure parking around Kirkby Stephen with a booked transfer to St Bees and a return transfer from Robin Hood's Bay rather than recovering a car from the opposite coast yourself.

Clay Bank Top

Clay Bank Top is a walking stage end, not a lodging village. Pre-arrange pickup to the booked hotel and a return to the same trail point the following morning.

Check engineering work, Sunday service, luggage restrictions, last departures and exact pickup points for your travel dates.

05 / TRIPS OFFERED ON THIS TRAIL

Compare trips from walking-holiday providers.

These are bookable trips offered by independent providers along all or part of this trail. Walking trips are the core comparison; when a genuinely relevant horseback, cycling or running version exists, we label it clearly as a different way to experience the same route landscape.
