A summit night, a lakeside refuge and a walk home to Cortina.

Spend one night on Nuvolau's rocky summit and another beside the lake at Croda da Lago, then walk down to Cortina to collect your main bag. A prebooked taxi to Passo Falzarego puts you straight into the mountains on the first morning. The stages leave room for lunch stops, photographs and an unhurried arrival at the huts. This is a custom DIY itinerary using established public paths, including a walking variant of Alta Via 1 and the final stage of Cortina Dolomiti Ultratrekking. It is not a complete Alta Via, an official named three-day circuit or a verified tour-operator package. The plan uses the normal Nuvolau approach, the upper Gores de Federa trail and the road onward from Ponte de Federa toward the Ajal turnoff. It leaves out the lower gorge's cable-and-grating branch and needs no lift. It still involves rocky mountain paths, steep descents and an exposed summit setting.

Purple dashed lines follow the three-day walking route from the path-441 trailhead near Passo Falzarego, via Nuvolau and Croda da Lago, to Cortina’s church-square area. The lakeside paths at Croda now join. Confirm the taxi drop-off, hut entrances and onward walk to your hotel locally; those final approaches are not shown.

About this map and its limits

Purple dashed lines follow the three-day walking route from the path-441 trailhead near Passo Falzarego, via Nuvolau and Croda da Lago, to Cortina’s church-square area. The lakeside paths at Croda now join. Confirm the taxi drop-off, hut entrances and onward walk to your hotel locally; those final approaches are not shown. Use this overview for planning and carry a current topographic map for navigation. The lines follow paths recorded on OpenStreetMap; they have not been checked on the ground or for current conditions. No verified elevation profile is available. The Falzarego pass-centre reference is about 102 m from the mapped trail start, but the actual taxi stopping place and walking approach need agreement with your driver. Nuvolau and other hut pins mark nearby paths, not surveyed entrances. Day 2 and day 3 meet on the mapped lakeside path at Croda da Lago. Day 3 ends in Cortina’s church-square area; the final hotel walk remains additional.

02 / MAKE ROOM FOR THE WALK

Three walking days. Two hut nights. Back to your base on foot.

Taxi to Passo Falzarego. Two hut nights. Walk back to Cortina.

Stage distances, ascent & place names

Allow a hotel night before the walk and preferably another afterward. With both valley nights, that makes four overnights in the area, including the two mountain-hut nights. The final walk reaches Cortina itself; a bus or cable-car descent is not part of the main plan. At a glance: day one is about 4.3 km / 2.7 mi from the mapped path-441 trailhead, with a published 2h15 approach. Day two is about 9 km / 5.6 mi and approximately four hours. These first two distances are map-based planning estimates. Day three is about 12 km / 7.5 mi to Cortina's church-square area on the selected mapped lakes return, before the final hotel approach. Cortina's published stage gives 3½ hours; allow extra time for stops and junction checks. Reliable first- and second-day cumulative ascent/descent, exact hotel-door extensions and a complete trip total remain unverified.

THE WALKING PLAN

Three walking days · two hut nights

3 walking days · distance to confirm

Travel sequence: Cortina hotel → road taxi to Passo Falzarego → Nuvolau, night one → Cinque Torri and Rucurto → Croda da Lago, night two → Malga Federa, Lago d'Ajal and Campo → Cortina centre.

Two mountain-hut nights form the walking core. Optional arrival and return hotel nights in Cortina are separate bookings. The four-night budget assumes you add both hotel nights; adjust it if your trip differs.

This guide currently describes one complete DIY plan. The operator alternatives below may change the nights, route or finish; they are not automatic shortcuts to this walk.

Three walking days · two hut nights

Travel sequence: Cortina hotel → road taxi to Passo Falzarego → Nuvolau, night one → Cinque Torri and Rucurto → Croda da Lago, night two → Malga Federa, Lago d'Ajal and Campo → Cortina centre.

This is a starting plan, not a reservation. Confirm every overnight stay, walking stage and required lift or transfer for the same dates. Rest days add time and another night; they do not shorten a walking stage.

03 / THE PLACES ALONG THE WAY

Shape the days around the stays.

Reserve Rifugio Nuvolau for night one and Rifugio Croda da Lago–Gianni Palmieri for night two. Arrival and return hotels in Cortina are separate. Agree split stays and storage through both hut nights. Prices and availability have not been checked.

Know exactly which refuge bed you are reserving

Mountain-hut nights and valley hotel nights are separate bookings. Reserve the named huts for consecutive nights, then confirm your hotel's split stays, luggage storage and exact walking approach.

The map shows mapped paths and hut and hotel locations. Check the map notes for any missing sections; unverified entrance approaches are not drawn. Use current topographic maps and local hut advice for navigation.

Read the button before booking. "Check dates" opens an online booking page. Email and form enquiries need a reply. Even with a confirmed room, arrange meals, trail access and luggage separately.

1 Passo Falzarego2.7 mi / 4.3 km to Rifugio Nuvolau

Take your prebooked taxi from Cortina to Passo Falzarego. Follow the hut's published approach on path 441, joining 439 for the final ascent to Nuvolau. The approach reaches the Averau/Forcella Nuvolau area before climbing to the summit hut, where the mountain panorama is the reward for staying overnight. About 4.3 km / 2.7 mi from the signed path-441 trailhead; published walking time about 2h15. The distance follows mapped walking paths via Forcella Averau and the Averau/Forcella Nuvolau area, rather than a straight line between huts. Confirm the taxi's precise pass drop-off and walk to the signed trailhead; those first few minutes vary with the stopping point. Cumulative ascent and descent are not yet verified. This is the shortest day, so there is no need to make your arrival dependent on a tightly timed transfer or a summit detour. Nuvolau recommends reaching the area the previous day rather than coupling a long travel day with the climb. Stay on the normal walking approach. The Ra Gusela route, path 438, is a via ferrata and is not included. The planning distance is derived from mapped path 441 and the hut approach, using © OpenStreetMap contributors; it is not a field survey.

2 Rifugio Nuvolau5.6 mi / 9.0 km to Rifugio Croda da Lago–Gianni Palmieri

Return north on 439 toward Forcella Nuvolau/Averau, then continue toward Rifugio Cinque Torri. Take 437 downhill to Ponte de Rucurto, cross the Giau road carefully and continue on 437 until it joins 434. Climb through Val Negra to the lake and Rifugio Croda da Lago–Gianni Palmieri. About 9 km / 5.6 mi as a map-based estimate, and about four hours in Cortina's written stage description. This day includes a substantial descent followed by a renewed climb from Rucurto. Its attraction is the change from rocky towers to forest and lakeshore. The route is the published alternative for walkers avoiding the equipped descent from Nuvolau toward Giau. The approximate distance follows the connected normal walking paths through the Averau area, Cinque Torri, Rucurto and Val Negra, using © OpenStreetMap contributors. Cumulative ascent/descent remains unverified. Croda da Lago also supplies its own Rucurto approach map and GPX for the final climb; that file covers only part of this day.

3 Rifugio Croda da Lago–Gianni Palmieri7.5 mi / 12.0 km to Cortina church-square area

Descend on 432 to Malga Federa, then follow the upper Gores de Federa trail to Ponte de Federa, around 1,600 m. At the bridge, leave the gorge trail and stay on the 432 road downhill to the forest-track turn at Ria del Zandeaco. Take the link toward Cason del Macaron, described as 406 in the official stage, then 431 toward Lago d'Ajal. Follow 430 to Lago Pianozes, continue through Campo di Sopra and take the former powder-magazine/park-side route toward Revis and Cortina centre. Confirm destination names as well as trail numbers: the current overview map does not label every forest link. About 12 km / 7.5 mi to the church-square area, measured along connected mapped paths, including the Ajal and Pianozes approaches. This is an approximate map-based planning distance, with your hotel's final approach still additional. The official main stage separately lists 11.2 km / 7.0 mi, 185 m ascent, 1,015 m descent and 3½ hours; those published figures are a reference, not a surveyed profile of this precise alignment. Leave a generous part of the day for the descent, reascents, stops and luggage collection. This selected lakes return does not enter the lower Gores cable-and-metal-grating section. Upper Gores still has steep steps, narrow wet surfaces and bridges, so it needs sure-footedness. A signed easy bypass exists on the lower gorge route, but that is a separate variant and is not needed for the selected bridge-to-road finish. Check the upper gorge's current condition and the road/forest-track junctions with Croda da Lago before departure.

Opening days and meal arrangements change. Reserve meals at remote overnight stops, request packed lunches in advance and fill or buy water before each walking section. Official top-up taps are useful planning anchors, but always check current availability.

This is a planning guide, not a promise that a café, shop, meal service or tap will be open. Confirm dietary needs, packed lunches, dinner reservations and water access directly before walking.

LUGGAGE & BASE STORAGE

Carry the mountain kit; store the rest.

Plan the overnight pack and any valley storage separately.

Ask the hotel to hold your main bag through the two hut nights, with written confirmation of dates, any fee and collection hours. No multi-day storage agreement is included or confirmed. Carry overnight essentials, a liner, warm and waterproof layers, water, food, navigation, a headtorch and personal necessities. This plan does not include inter-hut baggage transfer.

HOTEL STORAGE

Agree where the main bag stays.

Request written confirmation covering both hut nights, the exact dates, any fee and collection hours. Ski or bike storage does not establish suitcase storage between stays.

ON THE MOUNTAIN

Carry your overnight kit.

No inter-hut baggage transfer is included. Carry the liner, weather protection, water, food, navigation, headtorch and personal essentials you need.

Confirm current prices, operating dates, collection times, excluded properties, bag limits, liability and any finish storage directly.

YOUR TWO-HUT-NIGHT KIT

What to pack for this route

Carry your two-hut-night kit and agree storage for the larger travel bag with your Cortina hotel.

  • Hut liner and simple overnight kit. A liner is mandatory at Croda da Lago; confirm Nuvolau’s current bedding rules. Nuvolau has shared dormitories, no private rooms and no showers.
  • Offline navigation and a current paper map. Use the official Cortina hiking map with the linked stage descriptions. Check coverage for Falzarego, Cinque Torri, Croda da Lago and the full lakes return. This planning map is not a navigation download.
  • A comfortable pack you already own. Test it with your actual two-hut-night kit and water before deciding whether anything needs changing.
  • Mountain footwear and weather layers. Pack warm layers and waterproof protection for the summit setting. Wet steps and narrow upper-gorge paths need sure-footedness; ask the huts about current snow and conditions.
  • Water, food and a headtorch. Confirm potable water, dinner, breakfast and packed lunches with both huts. Carry a food and water fallback for the full stage; resolve dietary needs before booking.
  • Optional walking poles. Practise folding and securing them when you need your hands. Check your departure, transit and return airports and airline before packing poles in cabin baggage.

Stay on the selected normal walking route. A general kit list cannot establish that the summit, upper gorge or current conditions suit your group. Confirm the route and equipment locally; ferrata equipment does not turn the excluded Ra Gusela or lower-gorge variants into this itinerary.

A little more time, or a more comfortable night.

These are optional additions to the walking plan. A room upgrade replaces that night’s room; an extra night or excursion needs its own booking and transport. Nothing below changes your selected stages automatically.

OPTIONAL VALLEY SPLURGE

HOTEL de LEN

Cortina, splurge base: HOTEL de LEN. A design-led town hotel at Via Cesare Battisti 66, with restaurant/bar and a rooftop spa offering a Finnish sauna, steam baths and outdoor whirlpool. The spa is for adults aged 18 and over. A comfortable option for the return night; confirm what your chosen rate includes.

How it fits: The property is in Cortina. Finish the route on foot and continue to the booked hotel. If you change hotels, explicitly arrange which property stores your bag and how you collect it.

Nights: One return hotel night is already included in the four-night outline. Choosing this hotel instead adds no night. For a full recovery or spa day after the trek, book two return nights: one extra beyond the outline.

Costs to add: Request a dated quote for the exact room, meals and spa access. No rate, spa treatment, day pass or availability is assumed.

Confirm short-stay acceptance, spa access and opening hours. A late arrival may leave little spa time that day. Luggage storage requires the hotel’s agreement. The hotel’s official link opens its branded booking engine. Its dynamic booking flow and live room inventory have not been checked.

Adding a rest day in the planner allows another night; it does not choose a property or reserve an activity. Confirm the room, meals, transport and any extra costs, then include them once in the budget below.

BEFORE THE BOOKINGS

Make the plan work
on the ground.

1. Secure the two hut nights in order, with board and dietary needs confirmed. 2. Check hotel split stays and written luggage-storage agreement. 3. Obtain the one-way taxi quote and allow a relaxed start. 4. Verify the complete route on a current map, especially the Rucurto crossing and final walk through Campo. 5. Recheck snow, weather, paths and hut service shortly before departure.

Confirm an indoor bed for every night, the distance to each stay, and how you will reach and leave the route.
