GUIDEBOOK + OS MAPPING
Carry the route description and 1:25,000 maps together.
Cicerone's Walking the Dales Way guide covers the full trail in both directions and includes a separate 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey map booklet.
The Dales Way is waymarked, but remote stretches and poor weather still justify a paper map plus a downloaded route. Operator mileage can differ slightly because of lodging detours and route variants.
02 / CHOOSE YOUR SUPPORT
Your walk. Your way of travelling.
You can change this as you plan.
03 / MAKE ROOM FOR THE WALK
The whole trail, or your part of it.
Start with the route length. Then allow time to enjoy it.
Classic six-stage route
Cicerone's six-stage backbone. The two longest days can be softened by choosing a seven- or eight-day operator-style itinerary.
Walking-day ranges are planning estimates, not a booked daily itinerary. Choose actual overnight stops and check stage distances before reserving. Rest days add time; they do not shorten walking stages.
This Route Guide now gives one practical lodging anchor at each overnight stop rather than an exhaustive hotel shortlist. Book the awkward Buckden-to-Dentdale section first, then build the easier village nights around it. The later DIY-planner upgrade can add more alternatives and exact door-to-trail comparisons.
Know how close the bed is before you book
On the trail means the property or official route source places the stay directly on the Way—no separate off-route transfer is normally planned. Near / stage stop means the stay is at a named stage stop, start or finish; the access note gives the most specific credible distance or relationship we found.
Use the named stay as your map anchor. "View hotel on route map" pins the property alongside approximate stage places. The dotted connections are not the surveyed trail and cannot measure a hotel-to-trail distance. "Open in Google Maps" helps inspect paths and directions; check the official route map for the marked trail. Any access distance or time below comes from its linked source and is labelled when property-reported.

1 Ilkley · start
12.9 mi / 20.8 km to Burnsall
Stage 1 · 20.8 km / 13.0 mi to Burnsall, largely following the River Wharfe past Addingham and Bolton Abbey.
Use this as the arrival-night anchor in central Ilkley, then walk to the Old Bridge Dales Way start the next morning. It is close to the railway station rather than directly on the riverside trailhead.
Five ensuite rooms, breakfast included and direct booking through the property. Its location near the station makes it a practical pre-walk stay.
The Dales Way passes through Burnsall beside the River Wharfe; the Red Lion sits by the bridge in the overnight village.
A long-established inn with rooms, restaurant and breakfast. Its own walking information specifically notes that the Dales Way passes through Burnsall.
The inn states that it is situated on the Dales Way in the heart of Buckden, so no separate transfer is normally needed for this stage stop.
Eleven ensuite rooms plus food and a pub in one of the most useful overnight villages before the remote crossing toward Dentdale. The inn recommends calling directly because not all rooms are released to online booking sites.
CAMRA's current listing states that the pub sits on the Dales Way route at Cowgill and has accommodation, making it a particularly useful anchor on the sparse middle section.
The inn is posting current 2026 opening and food hours. Room inventory is small, so confirm the exact night directly before committing the surrounding stages.
Sedbergh is a standard Dales Way overnight town. The Dalesman is in the centre of town and describes itself as a stop for Dales Way walkers; use the route map for the short town connection rather than assuming the footpath passes the door.
Stylish guest rooms, restaurant and breakfast in central Sedbergh. This is a practical comfort anchor before the longest day toward Staveley.
Traditional inn · official Dales Way finishing pub
The Royal Oak has been the official finishing pub for the Dales Way since 1996. Booking.com's property description places it about 100 yards up the hill from the end of the walk.
A fitting finish-night anchor with rooms, breakfast, food and the traditional end-of-walk pub stop before onward travel via Windermere station.
These are lodging starting points, not reserved rooms. Access notes and any quoted distances come from the linked sources. Confirm your dates, room type, actual walking route and luggage collection with each property before booking.
LUGGAGE TRANSFERS
Choose how often the larger bag moves.
Arrange transfers separately when booking your own walk.
The Dales Way is well suited to daypack walking. If you book independently, confirm every overnight address before booking a courier because upper Wharfedale and Dentdale can require off-route accommodation or a pickup transfer.
DAYPACK WALKING
Move the main bag every day.
Book the overnight sequence first, then make sure the courier serves every exact property and any off-route pickup.
SPARSE STAGES
Expect a transfer workaround on some itineraries.
Cowgill, Dentdale and the long Sedbergh-to-Staveley section are where operators most often adjust lodging or provide a vehicle connection.
STANDALONE BAG TRANSFER
Sherpa Van
For 2026 Sherpa Van advertises Dales Way transfers from Ilkley to Bowness at £17.50 per bag per move, with a 20 kg maximum and a season from 30 March to 18 October.
Confirm current prices, operating dates, collection times, excluded properties, bag limits, liability and any finish storage directly. An arranged holiday may already include daily transfers.
Booking an arranged trip?

Arrive in Ilkley the night before the walk; finish in Bowness and connect to Windermere station for onward travel.
Open the practical transport guide
Starting in Ilkley
Ilkley has direct rail service from Leeds, making it a straightforward arrival base. Stay in town the night before and start from the Dales Way marker by the Old Bridge the next morning.
Leaving Bowness-on-Windermere
The trail finishes by Lake Windermere. Windermere is the nearest railway station, roughly a short local bus or taxi ride from Bowness; check the dated connection before fixing onward trains.
Useful mid-route exits
The Settle-Carlisle line can help around Ribblehead and Dentdale, while Staveley and Burneside have rail links on the Windermere branch. These stations are not always at your exact stage endpoint, so verify the walking or taxi connection first.
Rail, bus and taxi availability changes by date. Check Sunday service, last departures and the distance between the trail, station and your booked accommodation.
05 / TRIPS OFFERED ON THIS TRAIL
Compare trips from walking-holiday providers.
These are bookable trips offered by independent providers along all or part of this trail. Walking trips are the core comparison; when a genuinely relevant horseback, cycling or running version exists, we label it clearly as a different way to experience the same route landscape.
7 trip options from 7 operators.
Self-guided and guided are both included. Use the Service filter above to separate them. This is a researched selection, not every provider or itinerary. Examples checked 26 September 2026. BEFORE THE BOOKINGS
Make the plan work on the ground.
The route is about 128 km / 79.5 mi, but commercial itineraries may quote 127–130 km and add mileage for off-route accommodation. This Route Guide covers stages, maps, operators, luggage, logistics and one verified lodging anchor at each overnight stop; a later DIY upgrade can add more alternatives and detailed hotel comparisons.
Confirm an indoor bed for every night, the distance to each stay, and how you will reach and leave the route.
