Dolorama Trail

Alpine meadows, pale limestone peaks and a bed above the valley.

SELECTED WALKING LINEAbout 61 km / 37.9 mi
PLANNING PACE3–4 walking days
WALKING EFFORTModerate–challenging · long mountain days
SLEEP INDOORSThree mountain-hut nights

The Dolorama is a four-day walk from Zumis to Laion, crossing alpine pastures beneath the Dolomites and staying at Monte Muro, Genova and Resciesa. There is no summit climb or via ferrata in this plan, but day one covers 20.4 km and the final day descends over 1,100 m. Start early, allow time for breaks, and aim to reach each hut before dinner. Bressanone, also called Brixen, makes a convenient valley base before and after the walk.

The map follows the four official Dolorama stages, with the huts and Brixen base hotels shown separately. A shorter choice changes which stages are highlighted. Brixen is outside the walking route: bus, train, lift and hotel approaches are extra and are not drawn as walking lines. Check each stay’s access note.

About this map and its limits

The orange line follows the official GPS route, divided at the three overnight huts. It measures about 60.2 km without allowing for slopes; the official daily estimates total 61 km. Hut locations come from the Alpine Club or official route map. Grey lines fall outside your selected section. Summit detours, lifts and extra hotel approaches are excluded. Use current official and topographic maps for navigation.

GENTLER PACING

Split the long first day at Kreuzwiese.

SloWays offers the full trail over five walking days, with an extra hut night at Kreuzwiese before Monte Muro. Its seven-day holiday includes four hut nights and two valley nights. Our independent planner retains the official four-stage chain; compare the operator’s exact board and transfer plan.

Compare the five-walking-day trip ↗ (new tab)

The official stages total 61 km, 2,356 m ascent and 3,004 m descent. The plotted GPX measures about 60.2 km horizontally. Different source measurements are labelled separately; check current conditions as well as the map.

02 / CHOOSE YOUR SUPPORT

Your walk. Your way of travelling.

You can change this as you plan.

03 / MAKE ROOM FOR THE WALK

Four stages, or a carefully planned shorter section.

The full route is the clearest starting point. You can omit the last descent using the Resciesa funicular, or reach Monte Muro separately and start there. Access walks, lifts and changes of endpoint still need their own plan.

CHOOSE YOUR WALK

Full four-stage Dolorama

4 walking days · 61 km / 37.9 mi

Walk Zumis → Monte Muro → Genova → Resciesa → Laion, with three consecutive hut nights. The official stage distances total 61 km / 37.9 mi. Arrival and finish stays, and any access from them, are separate.

The trip outline allows three hut nights plus an optional arrival and return night at the same Brixen hotel: five nights if both valley nights are used. The four walking days still end in Laion, followed by separate transport back to Brixen. Operators may sell only the three hut nights; check inclusions.

CHOOSE YOUR WALK

Three long stages · Resciesa lift exit

3 walking days · 51.3 km / 31.9 mi

Walk the first three stages and keep the Resciesa overnight. On the fourth mountain day, walk about 20 minutes back toward the upper funicular station, then descend to Ortisei if it is operating. The 51.3 km / 31.9 mi figure ends at the refuge: the departure approach and lift ride are extra. This skips the Laion descent, not the longest walking days.

Three hut nights follow the three full walking stages. The outline adds a Brixen arrival night, then departure after the Resciesa night. Arrange the funicular and onward journey from Ortisei to Brixen to collect bags. An additional return hotel night is a separate booking.

CHOOSE YOUR WALK

Monte Muro to Laion · three-stage section

3 walking days · 40.6 km / 25.2 mi

Reach Monte Muro by a separately planned approach, usually about one hour on foot from Pé de Börz, and sleep there before beginning stages two to four. The 40.6 km / 25.2 mi total excludes that approach and its transport. Genova and Resciesa supply the next two hut nights; finish in Laion.

Three mountain nights include the preliminary Monte Muro access night, then Genova and Resciesa. The outline also allows an optional return night at your Brixen base after transport from Laion. Earlier travel nights and transport to the Monte Muro approach are extra.

Full four-stage Dolorama

Walk Zumis → Monte Muro → Genova → Resciesa → Laion, with three consecutive hut nights. The official stage distances total 61 km / 37.9 mi. Arrival and finish stays, and any access from them, are separate.

This is a starting plan, not a reservation. Confirm every overnight stay, walking stage and required lift or transfer for the same dates. Rest days add time and another night; they do not shorten a walking stage.

Your walking days

04 / THE PLACES ALONG THE WAY

Shape the days around the stays.

For the valley nights, choose one Bressanone/Brixen base: Hotel Jarolim for station-side convenience, or Hotel Elephant for a four-star splurge. Returning to the same hotel makes bag collection simpler; agree storage before booking. The walk itself has three consecutive hut nights at Monte Muro, Genova and Resciesa. Contact each hut directly to reserve your bed, and wait for all three to confirm your dates before finalising the trip. Hut B&B rates do not automatically include dinner; confirm board, bed or room type and bathroom arrangements.

Know exactly which refuge bed you are reserving

On the official circuit identifies a staffed mountain refuge reached on foot. Village and base-town hotels are labelled separately; they are not substitutes for a booked mountain stage unless the access note explains the transfer.

Use both maps. "View stay on route map" shows the property with the route sequence. Google Maps is useful for roads, transfers and nearby services, but it is not the navigation source for a high-mountain circuit.

Read the button before booking. "Check dates" opens an online booking page. Email and form enquiries need a reply. Even with a confirmed room, arrange meals, trail access and luggage separately.

Opening days and meal arrangements change. Reserve meals at remote overnight stops, request packed lunches in advance and fill or buy water before each walking section. Official top-up taps are useful planning anchors, but always check current availability.

This is a planning guide, not a promise that a café, shop, meal service or tap will be open. Confirm dietary needs, packed lunches, dinner reservations and water access directly before walking.

LUGGAGE & BASE STORAGE

Carry the mountain kit; store the rest.

Plan the overnight pack and any valley storage separately.

Leave your larger travel bag at your Brixen base only after the hotel agrees to hold it across the three hut nights. Carry your overnight kit, food, water and mountain safety essentials on the trail. Return to Brixen after Laion to collect the stored bag; staying another night is optional.

THROUGH THE HUTS

Carry what you need each night.

Plan to carry your own bag between all three huts. Schlüter explicitly has no shuttle; road access or a cableway near one hut does not create delivery along the whole route.

LARGER TRAVEL BAG

One base, with storage agreed in advance.

Ask Jarolim or Elephant to confirm the full storage interval, any fee and collection hours in writing. Booking rooms before and after the trek does not itself include three-night storage. If you will leave a car too, obtain separate permission for those dates. Choose return transport around both the last bus/train and the luggage collection time.

IF STORAGE IS NOT AVAILABLE

Settle the backup before reserving beds.

Ask another booked valley hotel whether it will hold your bag, or request a separately quoted transfer to a confirmed finish hotel. Neither service is arranged by this guide. No independent multi-day store or three-night station-locker allowance has been confirmed here, so do not arrive expecting one. Keep valuables and essential documents with you.

A LOCAL EXCEPTION

Resciesa upper station → refuge

The refuge advertises a €30 baggage move from the funicular mountain station, by prior arrangement. This covers one local connection only; it does not move your pack between the earlier huts. Reconfirm price and handover details.

Confirm current prices, operating dates, collection times, excluded properties, bag limits, liability and any finish storage directly. Check the exact luggage provision in any arranged holiday.

Get there—and get back—simply

Stay in Bressanone/Brixen before the walk and, if useful, return to the same hotel afterward. Leave larger luggage only with written storage agreement. The walking route remains Zumis to Laion; the town connections are separate.

Open the practical transport guide

Start from your Brixen hotel

To start: take bus 401 from Bressanone/Brixen station (Bahnhof/Stazione) to Rio di Pusteria/Mühlbach Zentrum/Centro. Transfer to Mühlbach Bahnhof/Stazione for bus 415 to Rodenecker Alm/Alpe di Rodengo, Zumis. The two Mühlbach stops have different names and locations: allow time to move between them, and check the complete connection for your date before choosing a departure. Day one takes about 6½ hours of walking before breaks. Choose an early workable connection or prebook a road transfer to Zumis; do not begin late simply because a bus runs. Ask about early breakfast. A hotel guest card may not cover travel while you are staying in the huts; confirm validity for each day.

Return from Laion and collect your bag

At the end: from Laion/Lajen, Trojer-Anger, take bus 351 towards Chiusa/Klausen and get off at the station (Bahnhof/Stazione). Continue by a northbound regional train to Bressanone/Brixen, collect your bag and return to your original hotel if staying the night. This closes the loop without transferring the bag between valley hotels. Allow for the walk to Trojer-Anger and check the last useful connection and your hotel’s collection hours. A return hotel night is optional; protect a generous buffer if continuing elsewhere.

Shorter options need a different connection

The Resciesa lift-exit option descends to Ortisei rather than Laion. Check the funicular and an Ortisei-to-Brixen journey for that day; the Laion bus plan does not apply. Starting at Monte Muro also needs its separately arranged Pé de Börz approach and transport. Agree bag storage around the dates of your actual option.

The published 2026 summer timetable lists bus 415 from 10 May to 8 November. This does not confirm service on your future dates. Recheck the trip year, weekday/holiday notes, exact stops and live disruption alerts. Do not assume a same-stop connection in Mühlbach or a guaranteed bus-to-train connection in Chiusa.

SPECIAL STAYS & EXTRA DAYS

A little more time, or a more comfortable night.

These are optional additions to the walking plan. A room upgrade replaces that night’s room; an extra night or excursion needs its own booking and transport. Nothing below changes your selected stages automatically.

ON-ROUTE ROOM UPGRADE

A private-bathroom double at Monte Muro

After the first stage, settle into one of Monte Muro’s advertised double rooms with its own bathroom. The owner includes linen, towels and breakfast; other small rooms share showers, so the room category matters.

How it fits: Stay at the same refuge already in your itinerary. Continue toward Genova the next morning; no detour or return transfer is needed.

Nights: 0 extra nights. Upgrade the existing Monte Muro booking rather than adding a second reservation.

Costs to add: Request the exact private-bathroom room price and dinner charge. Replace the ordinary hut-night allowance with that quote; do not add the full room cost twice.

Availability and sole occupancy are unconfirmed. Ask for the bathroom category in writing and check the opening dates for your complete hut chain.

ON-ROUTE ROOM UPGRADE

A balcony suite at Resciesa

Finish the third walking day with a private bathroom and balcony in one of Resciesa’s advertised suites. The hut also has a cheaper private-bathroom bunk room; request the category you actually want.

How it fits: Keep the same refuge and your selected departure: walk to Laion, or use the separately planned funicular exit. This room choice changes neither.

Nights: 0 extra nights. Replace your existing Resciesa bed booking with the confirmed room.

Costs to add: The owner currently lists the double at €140 per person per night, not per room. Breakfast, linen, towels and shower are included; à-la-carte dinner is extra. Treat this as a checked reference, not a future quote.

Reservations are by email only. Confirm the exact suite, dates, deposit and cancellation terms; ask whether the room is available on your dates.

Adding a rest day in the planner allows another night; it does not choose a property or reserve an activity. Confirm the room, meals, transport and any extra costs, then include them once in the budget below.
