Walk from Fort William to Inverness along the Caledonian Canal, Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness. The seven-section plan protects the sparse early lodging stops and gives time for the high-route choices above Loch Ness.

Carry the paper map as a backup and save digital route information before departure. Check current route notices, weather, forestry work and diversions. These are ordinary links; HutHikes does not currently earn a commission from them.

02 / CHOOSE YOUR SUPPORT

Your walk. Your way of travelling.

You can change this as you plan.

03 / MAKE ROOM FOR THE WALK

The whole trail, or your part of it.

Start with the route length. Then allow time to enjoy it.

Walk the whole trail

The seven-section starting plan uses the official communities and splits the long Loch Ness side into practical overnight stops. Confirm the high or low route variants before walking.

Walking-day ranges are planning estimates, not a booked daily itinerary. Choose actual overnight stops and check stage distances before reserving. Rest days add time; they do not shorten walking stages.

04 / THE PLACES ALONG THE WAY

Shape the days around the stays.

Start with one researched anchor at every overnight stop. Trail distance is stated where the property or official directory publishes it; sparse-stop alternatives are labelled honestly. Direct booking comes first, with Booking.com and broader town searches where useful.

Know how close the bed is before you book

On the trail means the property or official route source places the stay directly on the Way—no separate off-route transfer is normally planned. Near / stage stop means the stay is at a named stage stop, start or finish; the access note gives the most specific credible distance or relationship we found.

Use the named stay as your map anchor. "View hotel on route map" pins the property alongside approximate stage places. The dotted connections are not the surveyed trail and cannot measure a hotel-to-trail distance. "Open in Google Maps" helps inspect paths and directions; check the official route map for the marked trail. Any access distance or time below comes from its linked source and is labelled when property-reported.

Opening days and meal arrangements change. Reserve meals at remote overnight stops, request packed lunches in advance and fill or buy water before each walking section. Official top-up taps are useful planning anchors, but always check current availability.

This is a planning guide, not a promise that a café, shop, meal service or tap will be open. Confirm dietary needs, packed lunches, dinner reservations and water access directly before walking.

LUGGAGE TRANSFERS

Choose how often the larger bag moves.

Arrange transfers separately when booking your own walk.

Nightly accommodation-to-accommodation delivery is the standard pattern. For selected moves or finish storage, send the exact stop list and ask for written confirmation before assuming the service is available.

EVERY NIGHT

Walk with a daypack.

Use an accepted property at every stop and confirm collection access at self-catering or unmanned accommodation.

SELECTED MOVES

Meet the bag every few days.

Ask for a quote listing only the transfers you need. Sparse rural stops may limit the pattern.

FINISH STORAGE

Arrange the handoff first.

Do not send a bag ahead unless the transfer company or Inverness hotel has agreed to receive and hold it.

Get there—and get back—simply

Use Fort William for the start and Inverness for the finish. Both are rail and coach hubs, and Scottish Citylink links them directly—useful for returning to a parked car or combining the route with the West Highland Way.

Open the practical transport guide

Starting in Fort William

Fort William has rail and coach connections from Glasgow. Stay centrally, then walk to the Old Fort start. If continuing from the West Highland Way, allow a recovery night before starting north.

Leaving Inverness

The route finishes in central Inverness, with onward rail, coach and airport connections. Check the walk or taxi from your exact finish hotel to the station.

Returning between endpoints

Scottish Citylink serves the Fort William–Inverness corridor. Confirm the exact dated service, luggage rules and last coach before choosing where to leave a car or larger travel bag.

Mid-route exits

The A82 corridor provides bus possibilities near Fort Augustus, Invermoriston and Drumnadrochit, but service frequency varies. Gairlochy and South Laggan lodging may require a walk, taxi or accommodation transfer.

Timetables and stops change. Verify the exact travel date, Sunday service, last connection and walking distance between the trail, stop and accommodation.

05 / TRIPS OFFERED ON THIS TRAIL

Compare trips from walking-holiday providers.

These are bookable trips offered by independent providers along all or part of this trail. Walking trips are the core comparison; when a genuinely relevant horseback, cycling or running version exists, we label it clearly as a different way to experience the same route landscape.

BEFORE THE BOOKINGS

Make the plan work
on the ground.

The route is largely low-level, but the high-route variants and the long Drumnadrochit–Inverness day add climbing and exposure. Rural rooms and evening meals should be reserved early.

Confirm an indoor bed for every night, the distance to each stay, and how you will reach and leave the route.
