Walk the 135 km National Trail from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway, or focus on the central Wall country. The seven-section plan below makes room for forts, museums and a shorter day across the wildest crags.
Loading the map. Places along the route are listed below.
Location overview: numbered pins mark approximate places. Dotted connections show their order, not the walking path. Use the linked route maps for navigation.
PAPER MAP / WHOLE TRAIL
Carry one waterproof route map.
The HARVEY 1:40,000 strip map covers the complete 84-mile National Trail on one lightweight, waterproof sheet, with the route and rights of way clearly marked.
Cicerone's Hadrian's Wall Path guide describes the full route and includes a separate booklet with 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey mapping. Check the edition and delivery time before ordering.
The National Trail accommodation directory is the broader official starting point. Use the named HutHikes anchor first, then confirm the walking connection before changing properties.
Carry the paper map as a backup and save your selected digital route before departure. The HutHikes map is for planning context, not turn-by-turn navigation. Check current route notices, weather, seasonal transport and diversions. Map and guidebook links are ordinary links; HutHikes does not currently earn a commission from them.
02 / CHOOSE YOUR SUPPORT
Your walk. Your way of travelling.
You can change this as you plan.
03 / MAKE ROOM FOR THE WALK
The whole trail, or your part of it.
Start with the route length. Then allow time to enjoy it.
Walk the whole trail
The seven-section starting plan includes Walton to break up the western half. Published distances vary slightly with lodging access and route measurement.
Walking-day ranges are planning estimates, not a booked daily itinerary. Choose actual overnight stops and check stage distances before reserving. Rest days add time; they do not shorten walking stages.
Start with one researched anchor stay at each overnight stop. Direct booking comes first; an exact Booking.com page appears only where verified. Every access note states the trail relationship or an honest transport connection, and the two map links let you compare the stay with the route and nearby services.
Know how close the bed is before you book
On the trail means the property or official route source places the stay directly on the Way—no separate off-route transfer is normally planned. Near / stage stop means the stay is at a named stage stop, start or finish; the access note gives the most specific credible distance or relationship we found.
Use the named stay as your map anchor. "View hotel on route map" pins the property alongside approximate stage places. The dotted connections are not the surveyed trail and cannot measure a hotel-to-trail distance. "Open in Google Maps" helps inspect paths and directions; check the official route map for the marked trail. Any access distance or time below comes from its linked source and is labelled when property-reported.
A practical arrival-night base in central Newcastle. Take the Tyne and Wear Metro to Wallsend, then walk to Segedunum and the National Trail start; this is a transit connection, not an on-trail hotel.
The property says it is 400 yards from Hadrian's Wall Path. Breakfast, an evening meal and a packed lunch are advertised; confirm meal times and dietary needs when booking.
The hotel is in Chollerford beside the bridge used by this walking section. Its walking break advertises breakfast, dinner and a packed lunch; confirm the current package or individual meal arrangements.
The inn describes itself as a stone's throw from Hadrian's Wall. Room rates include breakfast; packed lunches must be ordered ahead, and hotel guests should confirm the dinner reservation attached to their stay.
Dacre House says the Hadrian's Wall Path passes its front door in Gilsland. Breakfast is included; evening meals are available on selected nights when ordered in advance.
Florrie's describes itself as directly on the Hadrian's Wall trail in Walton. Breakfast, packed lunches and evening meals are available; confirm room configuration and order meals ahead.
A city-centre walker-friendly guest house at 44 Victoria Place, close to Carlisle Bus Station and about a 10-minute walk from the railway station. Confirm your exact route from the trail and add breakfast if wanted.
The official Hadrian's Wall Country listing places the guest house about 0.1 mile from the western end of the trail. Book directly and confirm breakfast, luggage delivery and onward transport to Carlisle.
These are lodging starting points, not reserved rooms. Access notes and any quoted distances come from the linked sources. Confirm your dates, room type, actual walking route and luggage collection with each property before booking.

Opening days and meal arrangements change. Reserve meals at remote overnight stops, request packed lunches in advance and fill or buy water before each walking section. Official top-up taps are useful planning anchors, but always check current availability.
This is a planning guide, not a promise that a café, shop, meal service or tap will be open. Confirm dietary needs, packed lunches, dinner reservations and water access directly before walking.
LUGGAGE TRANSFERS
Choose exactly where your bag meets you.
Arrange transfers separately when booking your own walk.
The established service is accommodation-to-accommodation delivery. Some operators may accept selected moves or a part-route booking, but do not assume a bag can skip several nights or wait at the finish: send the complete address list and ask for that pattern in writing.
EVERY NIGHT
Walk with a daypack.
Leave the labelled bag at an accepted property in the morning and receive it at the next accepted stay. Confirm collection times and access for rentals or unmanned accommodation.
SELECTED MOVES
Meet the bag every few days.
Ask the operator to price only the exact moves you need. Both the transfer service and each receiving property must agree to hold the bag.
FINISH STORAGE
Confirm before sending ahead.
A finish-line hold is not assumed. Ask a transfer company or your final hotel whether it will accept and store a bag before your check-in date.
FULL ROUTE · BOTH DIRECTIONS
Hadrian's Haul
The official National Trail directory says this service covers the full 84-mile path in either direction and delivers to accommodation including B&Bs, hotels, pubs and hostels.
A specialist route service. Ask about your exact accommodation list, part-route or selected-stop delivery, bag limits and current season before paying.
Sherpa publishes Hadrian's Wall baggage coverage and asks walkers with only one or two moves to contact the office. Use that enquiry route for a non-nightly plan.
Many self-guided Hadrian's Wall packages include accommodation and daily luggage transfer. Compare the exact overnight stops before also booking a separate courier.
Confirm whether packed lunches, evening meals and transfers from off-trail accommodation are included or only available as extras.
Use Newcastle for the start and Carlisle for the finish. Stay in central Newcastle, take the Metro to Wallsend and walk to Segedunum. At the western end, confirm the limited Bowness-on-Solway bus or pre-book a taxi back to Carlisle before reserving the final night.
Open the practical transport guide
Starting at Wallsend
Newcastle is the main rail hub. Tyne and Wear Metro links central Newcastle with Wallsend; from Wallsend station follow the local walking route to Segedunum Roman Fort and the National Trail start. Check first-train times if you want an early start.
Leaving Bowness-on-Solway
Bowness has no rail station. The 93 bus provides a limited connection toward Carlisle on selected days and times; otherwise use a pre-booked taxi or a confirmed accommodation shuttle. Do not arrive expecting a frequent turn-up-and-go service.
Useful mid-route exits
The Tyne Valley railway links Newcastle, Hexham, Haltwhistle and Carlisle, though stations are not always beside the trail. AD122 serves the central Wall corridor, and current Hadrian's Wall Country information also describes the HW1 connection toward Carlisle. Check the dated timetable and the walk or taxi from your exact stage stop.
Transport is seasonal and timetables change. Check your exact date, last departure, Sunday service and the distance between the stop, trail and accommodation.
05 / TRIPS OFFERED ON THIS TRAIL
Compare trips from walking-holiday providers.
These are bookable trips offered by independent providers along all or part of this trail. Walking trips are the core comparison; when a genuinely relevant horseback, cycling or running version exists, we label it clearly as a different way to experience the same route landscape.
10 trip options from 9 operators.
Self-guided and guided are both included. Use the Service filter above to separate them. This is a researched selection, not every provider or itinerary. Examples checked 24 September 2026. Starting prices are per person; check your dates, room basis, single supplements and inclusions. Currencies are shown as advertised.
