Carry the paper map as a backup and save your selected digital route before departure. The HutHikes map is for planning context, not turn-by-turn navigation. 02 / CHOOSE YOUR SUPPORT

Your walk. Your way of travelling.

You can change this as you plan.

03 / MAKE ROOM FOR THE WALK

The whole trail, or your part of it.

Start with the route length. Then allow time to enjoy it.

Walk the whole trail

The nine-section outline is a practical planning rhythm. Faster schedules usually merge village stops and create longer ridge days.

Walking-day ranges are planning estimates, not a booked daily itinerary. Choose actual overnight stops and check stage distances before reserving. Rest days add time; they do not shorten walking stages.

04 / THE PLACES ALONG THE WAY

Shape the days around the stays.

Choose a named stay for each overnight below. Most are in villages below the ridge: allow for the descent, return climb or a pre-booked transfer. Access distances are shown only where sourced.

Know how close the bed is before you book

On the trail means the property or official route source places the stay directly on the Way—no separate off-route transfer is normally planned. Near / stage stop means the stay is at a named stage stop, start or finish; the access note gives the most specific credible distance or relationship we found.

Use the named stay as your map anchor. "View hotel on route map" pins the property alongside approximate stage places. The dotted connections are not the surveyed trail and cannot measure a hotel-to-trail distance. "Open in Google Maps" helps inspect paths and directions; check the official route map for the marked trail. Any access distance or time below comes from its linked source and is labelled when property-reported.

Opening days and meal arrangements change. Reserve meals at remote overnight stops, request packed lunches in advance and fill or buy water before each walking section. Official top-up taps are useful planning anchors, but always check current availability.

This is a planning guide, not a promise that a café, shop, meal service or tap will be open. Confirm dietary needs, packed lunches, dinner reservations and water access directly before walking.

LUGGAGE TRANSFERS

Choose how often the larger bag moves.

Arrange transfers separately when booking your own walk.

Nightly accommodation-to-accommodation delivery is the normal pattern. One provider also advertises individual transfers, but selected moves and finish storage still require written agreement from the courier and every receiving property.

EVERY NIGHT

Walk with a daypack.

Use accepted properties at every stop and confirm collection access, especially at small B&Bs and off-ridge villages.

SELECTED MOVES

Meet the bag every few days.

Ask for a quote naming only the individual transfers you want. Do not assume a full-route service can skip nights.

FINISH STORAGE

Arrange the Eastbourne handoff first.

Confirm that the final hotel will accept and hold the bag before it arrives, or ask the courier for a staffed alternative.

Get there—and get back—simply

Use Winchester for the start and Eastbourne for the finish. Both have rail stations, but several intermediate village stops sit below the ridge and require a walk, local bus or pre-booked taxi.

Open the practical transport guide

Starting in Winchester

Winchester is a mainline rail destination. Allow an arrival night, then walk from your lodging through the city to the official National Trail start rather than treating the station as the trailhead.

Leaving Eastbourne

The route reaches Eastbourne after the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head. The trail finish, seafront hotels and Eastbourne station are separate points, so allow time for the final town connection.

Useful intermediate gateways

Petersfield can support a Buriton exit, Amberley has a station below the Downs and Lewes is a rail-linked overnight. Steyning/Bramber, Cocking and Pyecombe rely more on local buses, taxis or accommodation transfers.

Returning between endpoints

Use National Rail for Winchester–Eastbourne journeys and check the exact dated itinerary. Changes may be required through London or the south-coast network; engineering work can materially alter the day.

Timetables change. Verify the exact date, Sunday service, last departure, taxi availability and the distance between every stop, hotel and trail point.

05 / TRIPS OFFERED ON THIS TRAIL

Compare trips from walking-holiday providers.

These are bookable trips offered by independent providers along all or part of this trail. Walking trips are the core comparison; when a genuinely relevant horseback, cycling or running version exists, we label it clearly as a different way to experience the same route landscape.

Self-guided and guided are both included. Use the Service filter above to separate them. This is a researched selection, not every provider or itinerary. Examples checked 24 September 2026.
