Scotland’s classic journey from Milngavie to Fort William pairs lochside paths with moorland and mountain views. Choose the complete trail or a northern section.
Scotland uses pounds sterling (GBP). These are illustrative independent-trip budgets for two adults sharing a private room and booking their own stays. They are planning allowances, not quotes for the listed hotels. Change the display currency above; the original amount and currency stay visible.
MILNGAVIE → FORT WILLIAM
Seven walking days, eight nights
About £1,050–1,700 per person
Two adults sharing private rooms; nine trip days including arrival and departure.
Accommodation: 8 nights × £65–110 per person = £520–880
Food and drinking water: 9 days × £30–50 = £270–450
Glasgow–Milngavie and Fort William–Glasgow travel allowance: £50–100
Optional full-route luggage: £80 per bag
Contingency allowance: £100–150
These allowances total £1,020–1,660, rounded in the headline. They do not quote the listed properties. Carrying your main bag removes £80; peak-date rooms, extra nights or private taxis can exceed the allowance.

Lunch, dinner, drinks and travel to and from the route are extra
Premium accommodation is advertised from £1,350 per person
This is an operator’s advertised starting price, not a like-for-like final quote or confirmed availability. Check your dates, room basis and exclusions before comparing it with the DIY budget.
Allow more for: single occupancy, peak dates, upgraded hotels, extra nights, taxis to off-trail accommodation, drinks and paid activities. International travel, insurance and equipment are excluded. Meals included by your stay reduce the separate food allowance; confirm the room rate. Leave a contingency and get dated prices before committing.
The full-route example is nine calendar days including arrival and departure. It is a reference budget, not a recalculated quote for the selected pace or section below.
How these estimates were built
DIY room, food and endpoint-travel figures are HutHikes planning allowances. Current lower-cost reference points include By The Way’s £30 dorm bed and £70 private twin room, and Kingshouse Bunkhouse’s £44 bed or £54 bed with breakfast. These do not imply the same room price is available at every stage. The baggage allowance uses AMS/Travel-Lite’s published £80 full-route price per bag, maximum 20 kg. Their 2026 season runs 21 March–18 October; check future seasons and exact accommodation coverage.
Reviewed 2 October 2026. Published provider examples are dated or described individually below; future availability and prices are not connected to this guide.

PAPER MAP / WHOLE TRAIL
Carry a waterproof route map.
The HARVEY 1:40,000 trail map covers the complete 96-mile route from Milngavie to Fort William on one lightweight, waterproof map.
A paper map is a backup, not a substitute for checking current route notices, weather and any diversions. These are ordinary links; HutHikes does not currently earn a commission from them.

Walk the whole trail
Choose your pace, then check daily stages and overnight availability.
Walking-day ranges are planning estimates, not a booked daily itinerary. Choose actual overnight stops and check stage distances before reserving. Rest days add time; they do not shorten walking stages.
Choose stays in walking order, using the trail-access notes and map links below. The whole route has nine possible stop areas; a seven-day walk combines two sections and does not sleep at every mapped stop. Property pins help you find the accommodation, while three unverified positions remain clearly labelled approximate.
Know how close the bed is before you book
On the trail means the property or official route source places the stay directly on the Way—no separate off-route transfer is normally planned. Near / stage stop means the stay is at a named stage stop, start or finish; the access note gives the most specific credible distance or relationship we found.
Use the named stay as your map anchor. "View hotel on route map" pins the property alongside approximate stage places. The mapped trail line and property pins help with orientation; they do not measure the walking connection to your room. "Open in Google Maps" helps inspect paths and directions; check the official route map for the marked trail. Any access distance or time below comes from its linked source and is labelled when property-reported.

At 20 Station Road. The property's own guide puts the Douglas Street start obelisk less than 100 metres away; this is the property's reported distance, not a measured walking route. If using Travel-Lite, take your bag to its Riverside Car Park van between 08:00 and 09:30; the apartments are not accessible to its vans.
The West Highland Way passes this farm B&B on Gartness Road. The property is about one mile from Drymen village, so plan your overnight stage to the B&B rather than the village centre.
On Stirling Road near Drymen. The B&B says the West Highland Way passes its door. A useful alternative to staying in the village centre; enquire directly about rooms.
The hotel describes its location as on the West Highland Way. Confirm access to your booked room with the property. Its shop is advertised for April–September; plan October food and supplies in advance.
Beinglas describes its site as on the West Highland Way. Choose an indoor option and check whether bedding is included. Hiking huts require bedding to be brought or hired; check your exact indoor option.

The property says walkers pass the hostel common-room window on the West Highland Way. Choose an indoor room, hut or cabin when booking; the site also sells camping pitches. The property currently says its 2026 season ends 15 October and reopens 1 April 2027; check your dates.

The Walkhighlands stage guide linked by the official trail website ends at Inveroran Hotel. This is a remote overnight stop before Rannoch Moor; reserve your room and dinner ahead. Some rooms share a bathroom. For the seven-day itinerary via Kingshouse, Inveroran can be a daytime stop rather than an extra overnight.
The hostel describes its site as on the West Highland Way as you enter Kinlochleven from Glencoe, around 200 metres from the village centre. Hostel rooms are sold for sole occupancy, not as shared dorm beds.
On High Street in Fort William's finishing area. The hotel describes itself as the last stop of the West Highland Way. If choosing one of its separate apartments, check that apartment's address.
These are lodging starting points, not reserved rooms. Access notes and any quoted distances come from the linked sources. Confirm your dates, room type, actual walking route and luggage collection with each property before booking.

Opening days and meal arrangements change. Reserve meals at remote overnight stops, request packed lunches in advance and fill or buy water before each walking section. Official top-up taps are useful planning anchors, but always check current availability.
This is a planning guide, not a promise that a café, shop, meal service or tap will be open. Confirm dietary needs, packed lunches, dinner reservations and water access directly before walking.
ONE NIGHT TO REMEMBER
Worth the splurge.
Choose the setting, the soak—or the castle finish.
Stay directly on the West Highland Way beneath the mountains of Glencoe. Choose a hotel room rather than the bunkhouse for the comfort night; Feature rooms add the little extras.
No transfer needed: it sits at the official Kingshouse stage stop.
A lochside hotel with a heated pool, sauna and jacuzzi—an appealing reset for tired legs. It is not on the walking route, so treat it as a deliberate detour.
Plan ahead: pre-book a taxi or confirmed hotel/operator transfer off the Way and back to your next walking point.
These are special-stay ideas, not claims of availability. Check current room details, leisure-facility access and transport before booking; the spa and castle options are not normal on-foot stage stops.
LUGGAGE TRANSFERS
Your daypack on the trail. Your bag at the next stay.
Book a transfer separately when arranging your own walk.
Carry food, water, waterproofs and your daily essentials in a daypack every day. Book your main bag between approved stays, send it to selected later stops, or arrange storage where offered. Carry the overnight kit you need for any nights without your main bag. Confirm every pickup and delivery, including rest days and off-trail accommodation.
EVERY NIGHT
Walk with a daypack.
Leave your main bag at each approved stay in the morning and receive it at your next accommodation that afternoon. This is the usual full-route service.
SELECTED STOPS
Meet your bag every few days.
Carry two or three days of clothing and supplies, then arrange selected reunion points. Travel-Lite's part-route product allows up to three transfers; Baggage Freedom prices its service by the number of stops.
WAITING AT THE FINISH
Send the travel bag ahead.
Carry your hiking kit and have the larger travel bag held for collection after the walk. Baggage Freedom advertises storage in Fort William or Milngavie for up to 10 days at £5 per bag per day. Confirm where and when you hand it over.
Ask for the service that fits your exact route. Before sending a bag several days ahead, confirm that the receiving property will accept and hold it until you arrive. At West Highland Apartments in Milngavie, Travel-Lite requires you to bring bags to its Riverside Car Park van from 08:00–09:30.
AMS and Travel-Lite prices rechecked 2 October 2026; Baggage Freedom details last checked 19 September 2026. Published 2026 prices per bag. These are trip or stop-package prices, not daily rates. Confirm current prices, seasonal dates, supplements and collection arrangements with the provider.

Use Glasgow as the main gateway. The trail begins in rail-linked Milngavie and finishes in Fort William, which has onward trains and coaches. If you walk only part of the trail, choose an endpoint with a confirmed rail or Citylink connection before booking your stays.
Open the practical transport guide
Starting in Milngavie
Take a local train from central Glasgow to Milngavie. The journey from Charing Cross is about 24 minutes, and the official trail site places the start marker roughly a 5–6 minute walk from Milngavie station. Allow extra time if arriving through Glasgow Central, Glasgow Queen Street or the airport.
Leaving from Fort William
Fort William station and bus facilities are in town. ScotRail lists the average train journey to Glasgow Queen Street at about 4 hours 6 minutes. Scottish Citylink coaches also connect Fort William with Glasgow; compare the day's rail and coach times before choosing your final-night plans.
Walking the northern section
For the HutHikes "Northern Highlands" option, Tyndrum is the practical start: it has West Highland Line rail stations and Citylink service. Walk north to Fort William, then return by train or coach.
Walking the southern section
For the "Loch Lomond & southern trail" option, start at Milngavie and finish near Inverarnan. Citylink serves Inverarnan on the Glasgow–Fort William corridor. Confirm the exact roadside stop, direction and walking or taxi connection from your accommodation.
Other useful exit points
Citylink services stop at several places near the route, including Inverarnan, Crianlarich, Tyndrum, Bridge of Orchy and Glencoe. Rail stations serve places including Ardlui, Crianlarich, Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy. Rowardennan and some remote overnight stops are less straightforward, so do not assume every stage end has a direct mainline connection.
Journey times are planning estimates, not a timetable. Check your exact date, engineering work, last departure and the distance between your accommodation and the stop or station.
05 / TRIPS OFFERED ON THIS TRAIL
